The ancient Spartans declared war on their slaves every year in order to
frighten them into submission. As part of what was known as the
krypteia, young
Spartans were sent to the countryside and given
permission to stalk and murder members of the Helots, a servile
population who tended to the city-state’s farmlands. This ancient form
of domestic terrorism acted as a brutal training ground for young
Spartan warriors, but it was also designed to terrify the slave
population and deter them from attempting a rebellion.
RANG BADALTI ODHANI
One of the earliest slave revolts in North America saw a group of
African slaves effectively conquer the Danish-owned island of St. John.
At the time, most of St. John’s slaves were part of the Akan, an African
people from modern-day Ghana. Plagued by widespread illness, droughts
and harsh slave codes, in November 1733 a group of high-ranking Akans
began to plot against their Danish masters.
